It’s horrifying, but not as horrifying as OG Eva because of the context. OG Eva’s horror is paramount to getting what makes Eva what it is and the Rebuild’s approach to its occasional horrors is the sort of “Yeah, that happened.” The fridge horror feels more standalone, rather than indicative of greater themes. I feel it’s still worth discussing over.

Even after a Dummy System controlled Unit-01 dispatches a parasitized Unit-03, Bardiel isn’t truly gone. The angel resides within Asuka, something you can see if you freeze-frame the scene with the angel first hijacking Unit-03. With this in mind, Bardiel within Asuka holds even more disturbing implications.

Bardiel is able to make physical alterations to the Evangelion’s physiology, be it stretching appendages or spawning new ones. 

Asuka is also shown to have tape on parts of her plugsuit 14 years after the second movie. Bardiel also “awakens” within Asuka later on in the third movie, as a blue glow in her eyepatch.

Something tells me that after Asuka’s Beast Mode toward the film’s end, that Bardiel took over. Asuka refers to humans as ‘lilin’, something completely out of left field for Asuka. The question is how long is Bardiel taking control for? 

Bardiel exhibits parasitic properties. When some parasitic creatures hitch a ride with their host, they’re known to not alter the body, but also brain, sometimes permanently. It’s quite possible that Bardiel may have fully taken over Asuka or that Bardiel is completely inseparable from her. Let that sink in.
